Preventive Examination U1
This examination is performed 5 and 10 minutes after the child is born. The
following are assessed: skin color, respiration, muscles, heart beats, and reflexes
during the aspiration of mucus from the childs throat. In addition, a sample
of blood is taken from the umbilical cord and sent to the laboratory. The childs
weight, length and head circumference are measured. U1 is performed to determine
whether the newborn is mature or has to be transferred to a neonatal intensive
care unit.
Preventive Examination U2
This examination is performed between the 3rd and 10th day after birth. The doctor
listens to the baby's heart and lungs with a stethoscope and examines its abdomen with
his or her hands (palpation).The child's eyes, auditory canal and mouth are examined.
Ultrasonography is used to evaluate the child's hip bones. In addition, a blood sample
is taken from the child's heel; this sample is sent to the laboratory to rule out various
metabolic disorders. The child's weight, length and head circumference are measured.
