Preventive Examination U1
This examination is performed 5 and 10 minutes after the child is born. The following are assessed: skin color, respiration, muscles, heart beats, and reflexes during the aspiration of mucus from the child’s throat. In addition, a sample of blood is taken from the umbilical cord and sent to the laboratory. The child’s weight, length and head circumference are measured. U1 is performed to determine whether the newborn is mature or has to be transferred to a neonatal intensive care unit.

Preventive Examination U2
This examination is performed between the 3rd and 10th day after birth. The doctor listens to the baby's heart and lungs with a stethoscope and examines its abdomen with his or her hands (palpation). The child's eyes, auditory canal and mouth are examined. Ultrasonography is used to evaluate the child's hip bones. In addition, a blood sample is taken from the child's heel; this sample is sent to the laboratory to rule out various metabolic disorders. The child's weight, length and head circumference are measured.
