Mumps is an infectious disease transmitted
by the mumps virus. The signs of the disease are: inflammation of the parotid
(salivary) gland accompanied by a painful swelling below the ear. The complications
of mumps include: inflammation of the testes and of an elongated structure called
the epididymis (possibly causing sterility in later life), meningitis and pancreatitis.
There is no drug therapy for mumps. However, the disease can be prevented by
immunization.
